چکیده

Today’s Push-to-talk (PTT) services are infrastructure based and require stable end-to-end paths for successful communication. However, users with PTT enabled mobile devices may roam in challenged environments where infrastructure is not available. In such cases the traditional PTT services may exhibit poor performance or even fail completely. Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN) is a research area which addresses the communication requirements specific to challenged networks. In this paper, we apply the DTN concept of asynchronous message forwarding to transmit voice messages. We present an implementation of the DT-Talkie for heterogeneous clients such as Maemo, Symbian and Android based personal handheld devices. We also demonstrate the use of a DTN throwbox with large storage capacity to improve message forwarding.

Efficient codebook design for digital communication through compressed voice channels

The common voice channels existing in cellular communication networks provide reliable, ubiquitously available and top priority communication mediums. These properties make voice dedicated channels an ideal choice for high priority, real time communication. However, such channels include voice codecs that hamper the data flow by compressing the waveforms prior to transmission. This study design...

Performance Improvement of Expanded Integrated Local Area Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)

In Local Area Networks (LAN) connected together by bridges, flow control and smooth traffic in the network is very important. However, congestion at bridges can cause intensive loss of received frames. In addition, the received frames are thrown away and have to be retransmitted by the source station, which causes more congestion and massive reduction in the overall network throughput. The netw...

A simulation study of adaptive voice communications on IP networks

This paper presents simulation results outlining the behavior of rate-adaptive voice communications over IP networks. In the considered architecture, voice coders adapt their rate to the current state of the network, so as to generate only the bandwidth that the network is capable of carrying. An algorithm is proposed for driving the transmission rate of voice sources on the basis of estimation...

Quality of Service Analysis for Audio over Cellular

Cellular Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWANs) are most prevalent and offer highbandwidth data transfer. We believe WWANs can be availed for voice communications employing Voice Over IP technologies. Such a communication will be of better quality and offer higher resilience compared to voice communication over a cellular phone (using cellular voice networks). We present a Quality of Service analy...

A multipath model for the powerline channel

The development of powerline communication (PLC) systems for Internet, voice, and data services requires measurement-based models of the transfer characteristics of the mains network suitable for performance analysis by simulation. This paper presents an analytic model describing complex transfer functions of typical powerline networks using only a small set of parameters. The model is based on...
